Few words on India’s 66th Independence Day

On the eve of India’s 66th Independence Day, I want to write about a common man of India, Md. Usman, a tailor from Bihar is working in Delhi, a matriculate who hardly earns Rs 4000/- a month (US $ 72). He is sole bread winner to his family of six members. He says, he hardly saves Rs 1500/- to Rs 2000/- per month for emergency needs, health care, medicines and for education of his children. He is ubiquitous face of common Indian. He is a common man and not a scamster like so-called VIPs and he follows his religion zealously. Tomorrow he will depart to Ajmer Sharif for a religious procession. I hope that the sunshine of globalization and urban development will brighten the lives of billion people.

Happy Independence Day.

  1. $72 for a month is modest earning for him. Sorry if I am being a bit too bitter but don’t you know Sushil that in India beggars earn more than your matriculate and hard-working Usman?

    Happy in dependence day!?

    • Dear friend, there is a vast difference between money earned by alms and earned by sweat. In my personal experience, those beggars end up in serpentine queue at desi-liquor shop in the evening and those who earn by hard work ruminate cheap paan-gutkha which is the only luxurious item they could afford.

      • You are right, sir. As a matter of fact, I was drawing a contrast.
For millions of poor of India, it matters at the end of the day how much they earned.
