In India elite class never bothers to cast a vote. Middle class is like a barking dog that seldom bites. It is only poor and slum dwellers that appreciate and enjoy polling as some kind of festivity. For few poor people a free ride in car during election canvassing is a big luxury. For another bunch of poor people free liquor, chicken and quilt are icing on cake. It reminds me of a Russian Czarina who said why poor people can’t eat cake when they don’t have bread. Now politicians have become more down to earth, they have been caught red handed many times on camera bribing prospective voters ₹ 500 or 9 US $.
Govt. of India is contemplating to gift free mobile phones to 6 million BPL – ‘Below Poverty Line’ families which cost ₹ 7,000 crore (126 crore US $). Sheila Dikshit’s Govt. has announced free LPG gas cylinder and stove to BPL families prior to assembly election 2013. It means State and Central Govt. will spend at least ₹ 6000 (108 US $) per BPL family!
I hope in coming elections these shrewd politicians will provide free undergarments and pajama strings but only prior to elections. Unfortunately, these BPL families and APL (Above Poverty Line) families will have to pay all the billings after election because there is no free lunch in this world.
