Nearly 600 Government run schemes, dozens of medical colleges, engineering colleges, agricultural colleges, scientific research labs, international airport, metro stations are named after one or another Gandhi or from Nehru family and when a former minister, who is lodged in a jail on the charges of misappropriating funds meant for cattles, that jail is not named after any Gandhi or Nehru but a tribal freedom fighter – Birsa Munda, what a pity? Oh sad, there is no jail named after any Gandhi or Nehru.
There is one excerpt from a novel – ‘Sikandar Chow Park’ by Neelum Saran Gour:
“Last second of October I was invited to inaugurate a function in a kid’s school, she told him. I asked a little girl what the second October signified. She replied: It’s Gandhiji’s Happy Birthday. So I asked another kid: Who was Gandhiji? He answered solemnly: Gandhiji was a man who kept three monkeys and made salt. I didn’t know where to look and neither did the poor headmistress. I tried hard to condense my Gandhi info into a ten-minute speech but by now they were clearly confused by too many Gandhis. The Italian one or the Indian one? The one that’s fond of animals or the bent one with the stick? That’s right, I said, the one with the stick.”
