Naa Chahoon Sona ChandiManna Dey breathed his last on October 24, 2013 at the ripe age of 94, a feat which very few people achieve to live with active life. While reading his news of death and his contribution to Bollywood, I noticed that all prominent newspapers remembered him for the famous songs – Aye Mere Pyare Watan (Kabuliwala), Aye Meri Meri Zohra Jabeen (Waqt), Aye Bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo (Mera Naam Joker), Aao Twist Karen (Bhoot Bangla), Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai (Seema), Yeh Raat Bheegi Bheegi (Chori Chori), Kasme Waade Pyar Wafa (Upkaar), Yaari Hai Imaan Mera – (Zanjeer), Ek Chatut Naar (Padosan), Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli (Anand), etc., but I have my own favourite list of Manna Dey’s songs which are –
Aan Milo Aan Milo Shyam Saanware
Hamari Hi Mutthi Mein (Prahaar: The Final Attack)
Chalat Musafir Moh Liya (Teesri Kasam)
Naa Chahoon Sona Chandi (Bobby)
It’s really inspiring to know that Manna Dey lived his life on his own terms and stopped singing playbacks when he felt that his kind of good songs are no more composed these days. So we have lost all the male playback voices of 50s, 60s and 70s with the league of Kishor, Rafi, Mukesh, Talat Mahmood, and Manna Dey. It’s not like that a chapter is closed but a book of golden voices has been archived.
